Is TikTok the new Youtube?

Have you ever heard that Youtube is a parking lot for content? When Youtube started, it was the first (that I know of) hub for people to upload and search video content. Now integrated with Google (although Youtube has always been a search engine) this tool is key for users to find content on - especially how to videos or generally to learn something (via video form).

Creating long form video content can be costly, but I think we all know that once you post on Youtube that video stays there - and people years from now will be watching that content (as long as it’s still relevant). Most brands have a Youtube account and have simple vides that are informative about their products that last for years - gaining views over time.

Now, when it comes to TikTok it’s the same thing - it’s a search engine and highly engaged by Gen Z. So why are brands freaking out when they don’t get a ton of views in the first day (or two) of posting? As brands and marketers, we need to keep this mindset that TikTok is a search engine and it’s ok to not see immediate views that meet your standard. Now this may not be something to think of when creating “trending” content, but for the rest keep in mind what you can create that will be:

  • Evergreen

  • Searchable

  • Teachable

for at least for the base content on your channel. Now every video doesn’t have to hit all three of these, but two of the three should be a goal.

Getting started - What videos should you create now?

  • Think about all your FAQs - create these into videos for TikTok

  • What information do you want people to know about the brand? Can you make this into a series?

PRO TIPS:

  • SEO matters, not only the caption and hashtags, but the words you actually use in your videos

  • There is nothing wrong with reposting this content to other channels such as Instagram Reels, Facebook, Youtube Shorts, and Pinterest.
